The Ounasvaara Fell: Information for Visitors and Adjacent Residents

Ounasvaara is a fell located immediately east of Rovaniemi city centre, rising to 242 metres above sea level. It is the site of a ski resort, an observation tower, a number of walking and cycling tracks, and a hotel complex. It is also the subject of an ongoing entity assessment that was initiated following a series of Category B perimeter events in the upper tree line zone in spring 2024. The assessment has not concluded.

Visitors to Ounasvaara are advised to remain on marked trails. The upper tree line above 210 metres has been subject to periodic perimeter closures since March 2024. These closures are imposed without advance notice and may affect any section of the upper trail network. The current closure status is available from the Ounasvaara Trail Management Office on working days. Information is not available at weekends.

The Entity Assessment

The Regional Warden Office has classified the Ounasvaara fell as a Category 2 Assessment Zone under the Lapland Regional Entity Management Framework. This classification does not constitute a confirmation of entity presence. It indicates that the Warden Office has identified sufficient grounds for ongoing monitoring. The grounds have not been published.

Three separate perimeter inspections of the upper tree line have been conducted since the assessment was initiated. The results are contained in internal Warden reports designated with the prefix OV-2024. These reports are not publicly available. The Warden Office has indicated that a summary update will be issued when the assessment concludes. No timeline for conclusion has been provided.

Practical Guidance

Visitors should note:

  • Marked trails below 180 metres remain open to the public without restriction
  • Photography above the 210-metre elevation line is not encouraged
  • Any equipment left unattended overnight at elevations above 150 metres should be considered irrecoverable for insurance purposes
  • Unusual sounds from the tree line — described in witness reports as low-register and rhythmic — should be reported to the nearest Warden Office. They should not be recorded.
  • Dogs exhibited elevated stress responses in the upper trail zone during the winter of 2024–25. Owners are advised to note this.

Accommodation and Commercial Operations

The Ounasvaara ski resort and associated leisure facilities continue to operate normally within their designated zones. The Regional Administration does not anticipate any formal restriction on commercial operations absent a reclassification event.

Accommodation at the Ounasvaara Spa Hotel is not subject to advisory. Guests who experience audio phenomena during the night are asked to note the time and duration and to inform reception in the morning. Warden Office reporting forms are available at the front desk.
